Intellectual Property - The Comic Book
If the whole idea of intellectual property and fair use makes your head hurt, join the club.It makes my head hurt, too.
I want to get credit for the ideas I contribute to the global conversation and I know my friends want the same. I also want to be able to share other people's great ideas freely without stepping on their toes or cutting them out of whatever compensation they think it's fair to charge for their hard work.
It's just that the whole conversation about all this is so arcane. So lawyer-ish.
So boring. So a lot of people keep putting off even thinking about it until it cools off outside. Or it warms up a bit. Or until they have some free time they wouldn't rather use some other way.Maybe after they get that root canal they've been putting off...
Well, the
Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain has come to the rescue!
"Bound By Law" is a compelling explanation of the issues presented in a format that's both entertaining and FUN. I think I actually get the issues now, so I want to share the fun with you.
You can read
"Bound By Law" online
as an HTML document.
You can also read it online in a spiffy Flash-based
page-turning book format .
You can download it from this lesson (see the REFERENCE BOX at the bottom of the right-hand column on this page) or online as a
FREE PDF.
Or, if you want a printed copy of the book that you can carry around to coffee shops, you can
order one and pay for it here.
Enjoy!
Now you can't say no one told you...

Tolteca here; I was notified that you posted this lesson and only read part before going to prose at the end.
My son is a beginning film maker. I sent a copy to him via a link that provides some new library share software from Adobe. The web continues reaching out like an octopus. He is in Seattle or in China on his documentary expedition. His continuing concentration in Chinese martial arts.

Thanks for this! What a wonderful, comprehensive & accessible piece of work. I anticipate students actually reading this, and gasp, not only enjoying it but thinking about it & talking about it :-)
